Ancient China invented paper. The father of true paper was T'sai Lun from the Han Dynasty using silk cloth bearing texts of Lao Tzu the father of Taoism. In 105 AD the emperor experimented with a wide variety of materials using fiber of plants. The individual fibers were mixed with water in a large vat. Then, a screen was submerged in the vat with the fibers on its surface. When dried this thin layer became what we call paper. It wasn't until the 3rd century the secret of paper making began to spread. First, to Vietnam then Tibet and was introduced in Korea in the 4th century and spread to Japan in the 6th. In Europe the use of papyrus was dropped in the 9th century and parachment was used. The use of paper didn't occur until the 15th century when the moveable press was invented. This was the birth of modern paper and printing.
