It is formed by an upwelling of hot mantle material under the valley (which has elevated the land) and then split it as the hot mantle moves sideways away form the center of upwelling. This results in volcanoes and a Graben fault system (a rift valley) above the upwelling. Essentially the Rift Valley is the start of a new ocean - the two sides of Africa are splitting apart.

The Great Valley was likely formed through a combination of tectonic activity, erosion, and the movement of glaciers during the Ice Age. Over millions of years, these natural processes helped to create the expansive landscape that is now known as the Great Valley.

What is the widest valley in the world?

It depends on the definition. The world's largest geological depression is the Great Rift Valley running from Eritrea through Ethiopia to Mozambique at 26,830 square miles; however, since it is formed by plate tectonics rather than erosion, many do not consider it a true valley. The world's largest valley formed by glaciers and/or rivers (the conservative definition) is California's Central Valley at 22,500 square miles.
