Many samurai women became skilled musicians, storytellers, poets and novelist, such as Murasaki Shikibu, who wrote the "first novel" called Tale of Genji. Many samurai women won a praise for their literature or for their holy lives. But unfortunately, both were taught to be inferior to men. As a wife, no matter what ranking, your first duty was to bear a son to inherit father's land, educating daughters; teaching them suitable manners for polite society, teaching them how to read and write and how to elaborate ceremonial clothing.
The lower they were on the social pyramid, the more freedom they had for necessities. If you were a peasant, you would have about the same freedom as a male peasant, but as a higher ranking woman, you would have less freedom. But, as a peasant, you had more freedom, but less luxuries. They often worked as servants, farm laborers, shop keepers, or helped their husband with his work. The down side of being a samurais wife was that you were not allowed to wonder freely around the streets, only on holidays like; visiting a shrine, seasonal festivals, etc. But unfortunately, both were taught to be inferior to men.

In Ancient Greece women were under the absolute, patriarchal control of men. They did not rule. A woman's participation in life was strictly limited to the home. Women had no political power. Women sought solace in religion.
