This is a very broad question and it depended where you were. Jews were allowed to live in some locations, although in separate quarters. Jews who had taken Christianity only to avoid persecution in Spain and Portugal and came to Italy, were not always allowed to return to Judiasm, because practicing any faith other than Christianity was also subject to punishment.
