Their primary job was to have babies. Young, strong men were forced to work hard, long hours while beaten into shape by an overseer of a plantation, where most slaves worked. Slaves usually were treated harshly by their owner, and they could not buy themselves out of slavery. This is why the Underground Railroad and other like networks formed, to get out of slavery.
