Snakes are a common creature in many of the regions where religions first appeared. They thus had signifiance to the people there, who attached certain symbolic properties to them (as they did with all animals).
In some, the snake is seen as an evil or malicious form, such as the devil of the JudaeoChristian creation account and in some Indian mythology. In others, it is seen as beneficial and sometimes instrumental in allowing creation to occur, such as many groups in Africa and Australia, and in Greek and Chinese mythology.
Snakes are descended from lizards that lived in the Cretaceous period about 120 million years ago. It is debates as to whether these lizards swam or burrowed (though a recent fossil find suggests burrowing), but in either swimming or burrowing they did not use their legs. Over the generations the legs of these lizards became smaller and less developed until they disappeared completely. At the same time the bodies become more slender and elongated.
Snakes evolved from lizards during the Cretaceous period. These snake ancestors lost their legs as an adaptation either for swimming or burrowing.
