Very hard. The slaves would be tied closely together for potentially over a month with little/no exercise, maybe only a few minutes a day. There was no sanitation, and when slaves were stacked in bunks the one on the bottom would end up wallowing in the other's feces. Sometimes, sailors were known to rape the women. Although most lived, it wasn't a fun time.
