At first, the states were divided into much different boundaries from what we know today. As time progressed, the boundaries continually changed over the next few hundred years. As of now, we have 50 states, but they may change as rumors have it we may be getting a 51st state. While these rumors are not yet confirmed, we will still need to wait and see. There is also debate of whether North Dakota and South Dakota will fuse into a new, larger state, as the same with the Carolinas and the Virginias.
