To accurately find the literacy rate of any country, you need to use census data. A census is a questionnaire, normally held at least every 10 years, which every citizen of a country is legally required to answer, and it contains questions such as "how old are you?" and "what religion are you?" and "how much money do you make?" and "can you read?".

After these answers are taken in, all you need to do is count the number of people who answered "yes" to "can you read?" and divide this by the number of people in the country, then convert the answer to a percentage.

In 2011, the Indian literacy rate was 74.04%.
