I'm replacing the engine on 1995 Saturn sl2 manuel trans do you pull the engine trans out the bottum or the engine out the top?

the manual tells you to pull the whole engine don't
take off a lot of the larger pieces and all motor mounts
lift the engine about 3-6 inches remove the trans out the top it wont fit through the wheel well because of the sub frame and axle without a lot of work
