Take off the door panel. the plastic clip that holds the metal rod to the door handle came off or broke off. replace it.

If the door won't open from the inside, then maybe it's due to the child safety locks. If it won't open from the outside, then maybe it's locked, or the door handle mechanism has broken, as it has on my 1998 Civic. From the inside, you might be able to remove the screw holding the handle and slide the handle set forward to remove it from the door.

theres a bar that connects the back of the door handle to the latch that breaks loose from the handle from time to time. you would to to remove your door panel to see if that bar is still running from the outside handle straight down to the latch

You have to remove the door panel from the inside of the door,and then remove the door linkage from the inside of the door handle. Next there are two bolts that you need to remove from the inside of the door handle,and then it will come off of the car.
If you lock your keys in the car, get a wire (because you can bend and shape it without it breaking) coat hanger and wrap it around the door handle and pull. Usually once the door handle is pulled from the inside, the door will unlock/open.
