On the Eddie Bauer it should be the 4.0 L SOHC Check your VIN # - if the 8th "character" is an E it is the SOHC engine , if it is an X it would be the 4.0 L OHV engine.

first off 97 didnt use a speedo cable,on the back of the transfer case is a vss (vehicle speed sensor)try and replace that if that doesnt solve your problems check the gauge cluster,i have a 97 eb exporer and i had the same issue it was driving me nuts had the dealer scan it and they couldn't tell me anything,i found my cluster at a bone yard for $40 and it solved my issues good luck
There is a switch on both drivers side door and passenger door, it is going to be by the door latch you will have to remove the door cover so you can get to it. easy fix would be to spray down with wd-40 or you can by the part for about 15.00 dlls.
The door switches are located inside the door locks. If your having any problems with them. for example your interior lights / running board lights exc, are staying on . spray some WD-40 on all the door jams including the rear door hatch and glass. this should take care of problem.

If you have spark, you have fuel and you have compression, It will start. Backtrack and find which is not happening. You might also want to check your timing because you can have fuel,spark and compression, but if the engine is out of time it will not start. The timing has to be close for it to start
