Mail boxes must be at least five feet from a fire hydrant, and the ideal distance from the bottom of the box to the street should be 44 - 46 inches, and the front of the box should be flush with the front of the curb. The exception to this would be if you have a rolled curb and gutter, in which case you need to contact the manager of your local post office.
It is a felony to tamper with mailboxes. The judge may not be severe but there can be a large fine and even jail time.
In the U.S. the law varies from state to state, in Oregon you must park no further than 12 inches from the curb. Some states allow as much as 18 inches. Ideally for safety, I tell drive students to be about 6 inches from the curb, there is less chance a passing vehicle will hit your car.

Yes, that is what a Federal Law is so all states must obey the law.
NOT an answer, but rather, an elaboration: I know in America, they are protected by law and is a federal offence to vandalize since you are technically leasing your mailbox to the federal government in order to receive your mail from the United States Postal Service. "Mailboxes are considered federal property, and federal law (Title 18, United States Code, Section 1705), makes it a crime to vandalize them (or to injure, deface or destroy any mail deposited in them). Violators can be fined up to $250,000, or imprisoned for up to three years, for each act of vandalism." What about Canada? Are there laws in place that protect residential mailboxes, or is it just covered under private property? If you know, I would love if you would share with me! Thank you!
Most states specify no more than 12 inches from curb. In San Fransisco, you must turn the front tires in or out while parked or be ticketed. This is an old law that still applies today as a car can roll down hill especially if it is a stick shift and the park brake don't hold good.
My understanding is the vehicle must be off the tar at least a resonable amount. New york law says 6". California doesn't really specify as far as I can tell and I've driven for 25 years in CA... From curb to tar is normally around 10-12"
