I have been working in higher education for 26 years and have never been aware of associate degrees where the state mandate was 90 credits to complete. The oldest two year institution in New Jersey was founded in 1933, and has always been 60 credits (at that time) to complete. There are colleges at present that require 60 credits, some states 62, and I know in New Jersey it is now 64. Now there are some programs of study at the associates level that require more than the state mandate, but they are usually in the allied health area, such as Nursing, Respiratory Care, Dental Hygiene, etc. Having to complete 90 credits would - in part - defeat the purpose of a two year institution.

Curriculum requirements vary by state and by institution. Some states require certain classes to be a part of every curriculum (English, etc.). Institutions can go above state requirements and add additional requirements. Texas requires Texas history. In addition, Houston Community College requires a second history class for an AA. Washington state requires Washington history. Tacoma Community College requires an additional Art class for an AA.

These differences can affect the credit requirements for a degree based on what the institution has deemed necessary for its program.

The difference can also be based on whether the college is on the semester or quarter system. A quarter system will usually result in more credits because you go through classes faster.

It depends on where you obtained the credits and in which courses. Most all community college have a limit on how many credits they will accept. Usually, it is approximately 32 which is half the program. You should start to inquire at your home county community college as to which program most of your credits will be usable.
