It's not so much about what ratio you are installing, it's more about the checking distance (cd) marked on the pinion. Install the new pinion with the right shims to put it in the same location as the original, then use side shims with the carrier to achieve the correct backlash. Sometimes you can reuse the original shims, sometimes you need different ones.
bad bearings, probably a pinion bearing
with a ipact wrench and a really good compressor
there should be a few access holes big enough for a wrench to fit through in the framework. good luck
Are you asking which ones to use on the block itself? What year of block do you have. Pontiac has basically 3 styles. The first is a two bolt design up to '68. The second is a 5 bolt design..from '69-'75. Then a 3 bolt design from '76 to '79. I'm going to assume you have a 5 bolt design. You will need the engine mount brackets from a '69 and up Firebird with a Pontiac V-8. It will use 3 of the bolt holes in the block. The upper hole and two of the lower holes. Buy the correct rubber mounts to install on the frame and you are good to go. Hope that helps.
It would depend on the year for example a good condition but used 1997 firebird would go for about 7 to 8 thousand.
Chances are real good you will take out your pinion bearing, pinion gear, carrier bearings, and ring gear in really short time.
go to youtube they have a video on this , very good animation.
A good website for rack and pinion steering replacement is www.rackandpinionwhse.com/. They offer many types of products within your search category, so you should be able to count on it.
to replace pinion bearing and seal you need to remove drive shaft.you then remove the pinion nut from pinion shaft. u usually need a pretty good rattle gun to remove this .then remove yoke from front of differential.u may need a puller but usuall tapping with hammer will loosen it. remove the bearing and replace with new one then install seal and replace cover and ypke. replace pinion nut, fill with oil.replace drive shaft
remove rear drive shaft. remove pinion yolk from front of diff.remove oinion seal replace with new one. replace pinion yolk, replace driveshaft,.. dhceck ujoints of drive shaft while out, its a good time to replace them
Buy a manual first.Remove drive shaft, remove pinion bolt, remove differential cover and drain oil.you will need to remove the axles and the carrier. Then the pinion itself. You will need to have a press to remove and replace the bearings.New crush washer (I am assuming it uses one)You need to be able to set gear lash after replacing the pinion. It is a tedious job requiring special equipment.you will need some way to hold the pinion flange while you set the bearing preload with a torque wrench. As you can see this is quite a job.It can be done but you need a good manual first,a factory service manual is best. You will need to buy or rent a bunch of tools. Then read and take your time and you will get it.
There is a super charged universal kit . There is also the regular turbo kit for the 3.1 liter firebird these can be bought from any good auto parts store.
