He reached the Caribbean in November 1493. Historians are divided on what he did during the next several years, but it is possible that he returned to Spain at some point and made his way back to Hispaniola in 1502.
Ponce de León equipped three ships with at least 200 men at his own expense and set out from Puerto Rico on March 4, 1513 on his first expedition to Florida.
In 1521 Ponce de León organized a colonizing expedition on two ships to Florida, where they were soon attacked by Calusa braves and Ponce de León was injured when, historians believe, an arrow poisoned with the sap of the Manchineel tree struck his thigh. The colonists fled back to Cuba, where Ponce de Leon died a few days later.
