Answer 1:

Joseph was a lineage of King David (Matthew & Luke). Since Jesus was of a Virgin Conception, then Jesus is not a lineage of King David.

Some would say that Mary the mother of Jesus was also a lineage of King David.

"If the miraculous conception be true the Davidic descent could only be through Mary. Was Mary descended from David?

"We are wholly ignorant of the name and occupation of St. Mary's parents. She was, like Joseph, of the tribe of Judah, and of the lineage of David (Ps. cxxxii, 11; Luke i, 32; Rom. i, 3)."-Smith's Bible Dictionary.

Three passages are cited in support of this claim:

1. "The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it. Of the fruit of thy body will I sit upon thy throne. If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne forevermore" (Ps. cxxxii, 11, 12).

2. "He shall be great, and shall be called the son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David" (Luke i, 32).

3. "Concerning his son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh" (Rom. i, 3).

The second and third passages do not refer to Mary, the first passage refers neither to Jesus nor Mary. There is no evidence to prove that Mary was descended from David. On the contrary there is evidence to prove that she was not descended from him.

1. "The angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city in Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary" (Luke i, 27). Joseph, and not Mary, is declared to be of the house of David.

2. It is stated that Joseph went to Bethlehem "to be taxed with Mary," not because they, but "because he was of the house and lineage of David" (Luke ii, 4, 5).

3. Mary was the cousin of Elizabeth (Luke i, 3), and Elizabeth "was of the daughters of Aaron" (i, 5), i.e., descended from Levi, while the house of David was descended from Judah.

This desperate, yet ineffectual, effort to establish the Davidic descent of Mary is virtually an abandonment of the genealogical tables of Matthew and Luke, and a falling back upon this pitiable argumentum in circulo: Mary was descended from David because the Messiah was to be descended from David, and Jesus was the Messiah because Mary was descended from David." John E. Remsberg

These genealogies do not give the lineage of Mary who is said to have been his only earthly parent, but the lineage of Joseph who, it is claimed, was not his father. But if Joseph was not the father of Jesus, what is the use of giving his pedigree? If Joseph was not the father of Jesus how does proving that he was descended from David prove that Jesus was descended from David? If these genealogies run through Joseph to Jesus, as stated by Matthew and Luke, then Joseph must have been the father of Jesus; and if he was the father of Jesus the story of the miraculous conception is false.

The Synoptics, as we have seen, are for the most part, mere compilations, made up of preexisting documents. These documents belonged to different ages of the primitive church In the first ages of the church Christians believed that Jesus was simply a man -- the son of Joseph and Mary. The genealogies of Matthew and Luke, which trace his descent from David through Joseph, belonged to this age. The story of the miraculous conception was the product of a later age.

If the dogma of the miraculous conception be true, if God, and not Joseph, was the father of Jesus as taught, these genealogies, being genealogies of Joseph, fail to prove what they are intended to prove, the royal descent of Jesus from David. The genealogies of Matthew and Luke and their accounts of the miraculous conception mutually exclude each other." by; John E. Remsberg

Answer 3:The genealogy of Jesus appears in Matthew and Luke. Matthew, writing to a primarily Jewish audience emphasizes that Jesus is the seed of Abraham and the legal heir of David, the long awaited King of Israel who would ultimately restore his people from exile. Matthew records fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile and fourteen from the exile to Christ. Matthew skillfully organized the genealogy of Jesus into three groups of fourteen, the numerical equivalent of the Hebrew letters in King David's name. Matthew's genealogy simultaneously highlights the most significant names in the lineage of Jesus and artistically emphasizes our Lord's identity as Messiah who would forever sit upon the throne of David. Luke traces his genealogy through David's son Nathan. It may be that Matthew's purpose is to provide legal lineage from Solomon through Joseph, while Luke's purpose is to provide the natural lineage from Nathan through Mary. It could be said that Matthew traced the legal line and Luke, the natural. As such, the legal line diverges from the natural in that Levirate Law stipulated if a man died without an heir his genealogy could legally continue through his brother (Deut. 25:5-6).

The Bible says Jesus is the son of God , and Joseph is Jesus earthly father only.

Answer from Islamic view:In Islam religion, Jesus is believed as one of the greatest prophets and one of the greatest messengers of God to mankind but neither God nor son of God.

In the Quran, there is a complete chapter titled 'Maryam' (Mary) that confirms Maryam virgin birth. Jesus was born as miracle by the word and command of God the same way as Adam came into being with neither a father nor a mother. So, Joseph is not considered in Islam as Jesus earthly father.

Quran says (meaning translation): "Jesus said I am indeed a servant of ALLAH (God). He (God) has given me Revelation and made me prophet and He (God) has made me blessed wheresoever I be and has enjoined on me Prayer and Zakat (Charity) as long as I live. He (God) made me kind to my mother (Mary). Peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day I shall be that I shall be raised up to life again... It is not befitting to the majesty of Allah (God) that he should beget a son. Glory be to him (God) when he determines a matter, He (God) only says to it "Be" and it is. Verily ALLAH (God) is my Lord and your Lord: Him therefore serve ye: this is a Way that is straight" (Quran 19/30-36).

Another view

God's one Church teaches and Scriptures include that Jesus is the son of God, that is the Son of the Father Who existed from all eternity, before the world and time were created. Jesus was God before His Incarnation to become also Man. Jesus is the only Person who has a true God nature and true Human nature. He is fully God and fully Man. He therefore has two wills, a Divine Will and Human Will. This was revealed by the Will of God. Jesus is God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, which has existed for all eternity. The Blessed Trinity is One God in Three Persons, a union and communion of three Divine Persons. Joseph is Jesus earthly foster father, a caretaker with earthly legal rights as father.

Some say that Jesus was simply a great prophet or a good man. However, Jesus cannot be considered simply either. He came claiming to be God. So, He was either actually God, or a terrible blasphemer. No "good man" or "great prophet" who was not God, would ever claim to be God. Else they would be a bad man (blasphemer) and/or false prophet. The Jews in authority at the time of Christ's ministry had him put to death strictly because Jesus claimed to be God, and they thought He was a very bad man and a danger to the body politic... but they were very, very wrong. Jesus was and is exactly what He claimed to be... God the Son.

Many heretics have also denied that Jesus is God. Anyone who claims Jesus is not God is not a Christian. If you don't know that Jesus is God, then you don't know the Father either. To claim Jesus is not God, is ignorance of authentic revelation about God by God.

Jesus said the last and greatest of the OT prophets was John. Jesus established His New Covenant Church to teach, and sent His Apostles to teach with authority in His Holy Name. At the death of the last Apostle, John in about 105 AD, this signaled the end of public revelation about God. Anyone who teaches a different Gospel than Jesus is Lord and God, is a heretic and knows not God.

If people actually honor what Jesus said about God, they would worship Jesus as the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity which is One God in three Divine Persons. So, to call Jesus simply a good man, or even simply a great prophet can't be true, and is actually blasphemy, and is sadly ignorant of history and of the revelation of God. Be careful who you listen to, as any earthly socio-political faith system established by men whether in seventh century AD or sixteenth century AD, which came hundreds of years after Jesus established His authoritative teaching Church as the pillar and bulwark of the truth, and after public revelation ceased, have no authority whatsoever from God to teach about Jesus the Christ.

God is His true father Joseph was his stepfather -- Matthew 1:18

since it was the Holy Spirit that overshadowed Mary and she became pregnant. Joseph had no union with her until after Jesus was born.

A:

Matthew's Gospel has Jesus descended back through Joseph and his father Jacob, all the way back to King David, while Luke's Gospel has Jesus descended back through Joseph and his father Heli, all the way back to King David. At the very least, the two evangelists thought it important that their readers believed Jesus was the descendant, or son, of David.

It is worth noting that Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) explains that while Luke's list may be less classically monarchical than Matthew's, there is little likelihood that either is strictly historical. There is no evidence that Jesus was descended from David.

Is Joseph the father of Jesus related to the same Joseph that is Jacob's son that was sold into slavery?

no.

Last name of Joseph father of Jesus the Christ?

They did not use last names as we think of them. They used the place that they were from or what family lineage they came from as a way to tell them apart. Jesus was called Jesus of Nazareth. Nazareth was the town that he was raised in. Joseph would be the same way. In the bible Joseph was refered to as Joseph son of David. This was because he was a desendant of King David.

Who was the son of David who continued the family line of Jesus?

In Matthew 1 it gives the family tree of Jesus Christ, from Abraham to Joseph. The son of David who continued the family line of Jesus was Solomon. Luke 3 also gives the family tree of Jesus Christ, from Adam to Joseph. The son of David who continued the family line of Jesus was Nathan.

Is Joseph the father of Jesus the same Joseph that is Jacob's son that was sold into slavery?

No, the Joseph who was sold into slavery in the Old Testament is not the same Joseph who was the father of Jesus in the New Testament. The Joseph in the New Testament is known as Joseph of Nazareth or Joseph the Carpenter, while the Joseph in the Old Testament is known as Joseph, the son of Jacob.

Who was the wife of Heli the father of Joseph?

There is much confusion about 'Heli' and whose father he was. Consider if you will Matthew 1, which contains the genealogy of Jesus' adoptive father Joseph-son of Jacob (verse 16)-from David's son Solomon. On the other hand, Luke 3, which lists the genealogy from David's son Nathan, might also seem to be the family record of Joseph-but he is here listed as being the "son of Heli" (verse 23). A bit confusing in the English translations. However, if we look at the literal Greek it says only "Joseph of Heli"-not "son of Heli." It is true that the genitive "of" does imply "son of" throughout the remainder of the genealogy. But in this case, it is widely acknowledged to mean "son-in-law of"-making Heli the father of Joseph's wife Mary, who truly was the mother of Jesus.

Did Jesus have a middle name?

Thew Jews of that time did not have last names. Jesus was referred to as Jesus of Nazareth, son of Joseph, of the family of David. Bar Joseph means "son of Joseph" but "Jesus of Nazareth" is the more common usage

No. Jesus' earthly father was Joseph. He was from the lineage of David.

Was Saint Joseph the father of God?

Catholics believe that Saint Joseph was the earthly father of Jesus, who is considered the Son of God. Jesus' divine nature comes from his conception by the Holy Spirit, not by biological relation to Joseph.

How far back does each gospel trace Jesus' ancestry?

Matthew's Gospel traces Jesus' ancestry through the male line from his father Joseph, then Joseph's father Jacob, and back through the great Zorobabel, son of Salathiel, then Jechonias, to David and finally Abraham.Luke's Gospel traces Jesus' ancestry through the male line from his father Joseph, then Joseph's father Heli, and back through the great Zorobabel, son of Salathiel, then Neri, to David and finally Adam.Matthew says that there were 28 generations from David to Jesus, and 41 generations from Abraham to Jesus. Luke says that there were 42 generations from David to Jesus, and 77 generations from Adam to Jesus. Both genealogies contain significant discrepancies against the Old Testament genealogies and, needless to say, neither account is likely to be historically accurate.

Were Joseph the father of Jesus and Joseph the son of Jacob the same person?

Joseph son of Jacob (Matthew's Gospel) or Joseph son of Heli (Luke's Gospel) is the father of Jesus in the gospels. Joseph of Arimathea was the rich man who buried Jesus in his own tomb. Some say that by doing so, Joseph of Arimathea was filling the role expected of a father in Jewish tradition.
