There are a number of things that could be causing the P0420 catalyst efficiency code. The most common thing is the catalytic converter is no longer working. The other thing is the rear oxygen sensor is no longer working properly or there is a leak in the exhaust system.
Bank 1 is the upper oxygen sensor(s) before the catalyst (catalytic converter) bank 2 is the oxygen sensor after the catalyst (catalytic converter)
From what I understand , the oxygen sensor ( s ) upstream of the catalytic converter is used in the control of the air / fuel ratio . The oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter is called a catalyst monitor and monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter
The oxygen sensor(s) installed after (downstream of ) the catalytic converter(s) are called catalyst monitors
There are four oxygen sensors. Two are pre-catalyst and two are post-catalyst oxygen sensors. Basically, there is one sensor for each side of the engine in front of the catalytic converter and there are two sensors behind the catalytic converter.
The location for the O2 sensor(s) are on the exhaust manifold in front(before catalyst, catalytic converter) for checking emissions from combustion chamber or behind (after catalyst) for analyzing emissions from the catalytic converter.
( 4 ) 2 that are used for air / fuel ratio upstream of the catalytic converter and 2 that are catalyst monitors that are installed downstream of the catalytic converter
Check for exhaust leaks, test oxygen sensor operation, replace the catalytic converter.Check for exhaust leaks, test oxygen sensor operation, replace the catalytic converter.
That would be an oxygen sensor installed AFTER the catalytic converter ( also called a catalyst monitor )
On the 4.0 L OHV engine - 2 oxygen sensors - and one sensor used as a catalyst monitor for catalytic converter efficiency mounted downstream of the converter On the 4.0 SOHC engine - 2 oxygen sensors and 2 catalyst monitors
After the exhaust manifold but before the catalytic converter on the exhaust tube.
Check for exhaust leaks, test oxygen sensor operation, replace the catalytic converter.
The oxygen sensor on a 2004 Honda Accord is found on the exhaust system. They are placed close to the catalytic converter so the sensors can properly read the exhaust flow.
