If the solution is hypotonic, that means that the concentration is less than that in the cell. Interestingly, despite the impermeability of the solute, the water still rushes into the cell to try and correct the imbalance, which causes the cell to swell and eventually burst.

An isotonic solution has the same concentration of a solute than the compared solution, in this case the cell plasma. As such, even if the solute was permeable to the membrane, osmosis wouldn't occur, because an equilibrium is already in place.

Because their is a greater concentration of solute outside the cell, water would diffuse, a process called osmosis, from inside the cell to the hypertonic solution. The net flux of water would continue in the direction mentioned above until the concentration of solute inside and outside the cell are the same, hence equilibrium is reached. This does not mean that their isn't flux of water across the membrane, but that the inward-flux balances the outward-flux.

Explain the behavior of water molecules in the isotonic solution?

Water molecules of an isotonic solution would not pass through the membrane, b/c isotonic implies that the solutions' molarity is equal. so water or other molecules do not need to pass through the membrane.

Isotonic does not change the shape of a cell membrane

What type of solution will have the same concentration on both sides of the cell membrane?

Isotonic.

When the osmotic pressure is the same on both side's of a semipermeable membrane each solution is said to be?

Isotonic solution.

Which are isotonic?

Isotonic solution is a solution in which the concentration of solutes is essentially equal to that of cytosol of the cell placed in that solution. There is no net osmotic pressure on a membrane placed between 2 isotonic solutions.

Does isotonic mean a fluid containing salt and minerals?

If you meant an isotonic solution, an isotonic solution is a solution which contains the same concentration of solutes as the cell it is being compared to. This creates dynamic equilibrium, as the amount of solutes entering the cell and leaving the cell is the same.

I have the same packet. The answer is C. It took me forever to realize that the pictures were the answers. (: you are so wrong. and its not nice of you to purposely mislead someone looking for help. hypertonic means that the cells will be crenated or shrunk. so the answer is obiviously A

Is 0.8 NaCl a hypertonic solution?

That depends entirely on what solution it is in. Hypotonic and hypertonic are relative terms to compare to solutions usually serperated by a seme-permeable membrane.

When molecules are moving back and forth across the membrane will they ever stop moving?

Yes, in an isotonic solution the movement of molecules across the membrane will stop.
