If our founding fathers believed that every man should be free why did it take until Abraham Lincoln to bring up the real idea of freeing the slaves?

The idea had been brought up long before Lincoln. Jefferson's original draft of the Declaration of Independence contained a strong attack on slavery which would have forced the states to abolish it had it been left in, but the Southern states insisted in be removed. Although there were always people strongly opposed to slavery, the slaveholders were always wealthy and powerful enough to block, politically, any effort in that direction until by secession they were forced to defend it militarily.
