In my car, the power door locks don't become active until the doors are closed. If the door sensor is damaged or misaligned the computer may never get the signal that the door is closed and as such may never get around to locking the doors. I don't know if the same type door lock mechanism is used for a Tarus, but it's definitely a possibility. Makes sense - thanks for the help! I also discovered from other peoples questions that the door switch on the Taurus is prone to sticking. Cleaning the door switch took care of all of the problems.
