I had the same problem. A lot of WD 40 in the spring mechanism under the hood - especially where the cable is that is connected to the hood latch under the steering wheel works wonders. I did that and it seems to pop back the correct way -- although I have to repeat it several times. I had this fixed four different times at three different places. They often cleaned it, put DW40 on it, and even replaced the hood latch. The last place replaced the cable. This finally solved the problem.
