benefits would be more precise running of your vehicle, you could alter the performance in car, very easily, you wouldn't be limited to your power range as a camshaft is very limited, & only opens valves as much as they are set to.
electronic, or air lifters, or what ever style you would suggest can be as variable as you want them to be.
huge benefits.
however, it would be expensive, & less reliable, there would be greater chance of failure, but with modern technology coming along, its likely to become more & more reliable, maybe one day we will see this on top end cars off the shelf.

i dont see how you can eliminate the cam shaftalso the valves are already controlled by computer, thru the cam shaft position sensor
