If you and a co-worker both came up with a great idea how should you react when the co-worker overstates their contribution when describing it to others?

Sounds like such a simple question - but I know how hairy that situation is. There really isn't a right answer for this - so let me just give you a few tips. You should be assertive, and let the person know that you both came up with the idea/concept - and you both should get equal credit. Explain your side - they will probably understand. Remember - don't be worried about petty things. If you and your co worker made a 300 page report that changes the future of your company, then by all means stand up and say something. If we are simply talking about coming up with an idea for something low - priority (a retail isle end cap design for instance) let them take the credit because nobody really cares anyway. They get credit, you get a valuable lesson in being humble. Don't worry - what goes around comes around. The above poster is correct and gave good advice. I think this happens to many people and sometimes it's a tough pill to swallow. I've had this happen to me on several occasions and if it's important I choose my words very carefully when talking to the coworker and let them know in no uncertain terms they should be sharing the glory with you and if not, you are keeping your thoughts to yourself. Generally the person kept out is the one with the brainstorms. When I want to be successful I go it alone and do my research because I've learned the hard way I've had important work stolen right out from under me. It was hard work, and I don't like giving it up. With smaller issues let it slide, but when it means a possible raise or rise in position you have to be a shark! I was once asked to be a "ghost writer" for an author and refused. My attitude was "why should I give all my talents away (even though I would get paid from the author) while the author stood in a stand of glory. When I want to write I do it for myself and work hard at it. If any glory is coming down the road you bet I want it. Business is tough and whether we like it or not (without hurting innocent people) we have to become the head shark in an ocean of sharks. People that know both of you will figure out who did some of the work and that's you. Usually people that crow the most are the ones that did less of the work. Be patient, but have a good talk to your coworker and tell them to knock-off grand-standing or you're splitting.
