The iPhone must be used with its exclusive carrier in the United States (AT&T) and the U.K. (O2), but in Germany (T-mobil) and France (Orange), local laws prevent competitor lockout, and unlocked iPhones are available there (for a premium cost). Anywhere Apple does business, however, unlocking the phone via unauthorized means will void the warranty on the unit.
