Let him know you don't mean to offend him and that you are cool with him being gay or straight. If you tell him you are gay (assuming you are in the closet also) and he knows you can keep a secret, he will be much more likely to tell you if he is gay. Carefully weigh the risks and benefits though as crushes in any form can be a deal breaker if they are unwanted.
