I assume you are asking if this will harm the engine. The answer is no, it will do no harm to the engine. It will however, possibly allow exhaust gases to enter the passenger compartment, and as you know, that can be deadly. If it were my truck, I would have it repaired or replaced, and not take that chance.
The first sensor directly behind the drivers side exhaust manifold, it is threaded into the exhaust y-pipe.
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) look for it to be attached to the exhaust manifold or a pipe from the exhaust manifold
in a port near the flange on the exhaust manifold on the drivers side. pointing toward the back. connected with one black wire.

If your 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity has the V6 engine the oxygen sensor is in the middle of the exhaust manifold nearest the firewall. If you have the 4 cylinder engine the oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust manifold just above the exhaust pipe flange.
