I got the shot yesterday. I'm not dead. Sure, there havebeen cases where that has happened, but so few that you're more at risk not getting the shot.

Will you die from getting the regular flu shot? Same risk.

For goodness sake, no. This is the last kind of thing that should be going around as a rumor, especially at the time when people who are at greatest risk should be getting a vaccination shot.

The vaccines for flu shots is made from "dead" or weakened virus particles that can not make you sick with the flu. The track record with seasonal flu shots is very good with low numbers of adverse incidents or side effects. Unless you are allergic, it is expected that there will also be little problems with the swine flu vaccinations, since the vaccines will be made like the regular flu vaccine is made which has a very high safety history after decades of use.

In 1976, people had many problems with the swine flu vaccinations, but those were made an entirely different way back then, and there is also some speculation that the medium used for the injection solution was contaminated and that is what caused the problems, not the vaccine itself. In any case, the vaccine for the 2009 pandemic flu will not be the same as that was.

The risk of the influenza is much higher than the risk of any problem from the vaccination.

There have been a few rare cases of deaths that may be linked to the flu shot, usually these are due to an allergic reaction and each year with the seasonal flu, unfortunately a few of these fatal reactions do occur.

Yes you could if the allergy is severe enough and no treatment is immediately available when signs of reaction occur. In most types of vaccines, that is the most common reason for a death following a vaccination. But, that type of severe anaphylactic reaction is still rare.

Some people have allergic reactions to the trace amounts of egg/chicken protein that could be left after purification of the vaccine. The viruses are grown in eggs. However, death is rare due to allergy to eggs, and new guidelines have been issued for the safe vaccination of those with egg Allergies. If you have a severe allergy to sulfonamides (sulfa drugs) then you should not take the flu vaccines that contain traces of these antibacterial agents. The most common sulfonamides in flu vaccines are neomycin, gentamicin, and polymyxin.

If you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of the vaccines, you should not use them. Here is a list of ingredients in the vaccines formulated for the 2012-2013 flu season:

Afluria:

beta-propiolactone, thimerosol (multi-dose vials only), monobasic sodium phosphate, dibasic sodium phosphate, monobasic potassium phosphate, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium taurodeoxycholate, neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B, egg protein

Fluarix:

Just relax... The Swine Flu is like a normal flu. If you don't have a doctor and you are infected with it, well, you are in some trouble. On the brighter side, we have doctors.

There have been no reported deaths from this shot. Some people get some side affects, but nothing more serious than nausea and muscle aches or fatigue.
