Most Unemployment requires that you have worked for a period of time and that you have been involuntarily released. There are organizations who have received grants to help him return to the work force, so contacting them right away would be a good start.

Generally, in order to receive unemployment benefits, you must be at least theoretically employable. If you are sick or otherwise unable to work, your benefits may be reduced. Being in jail would probably count as "unable to work".

Someone in jail is not eligible for unemployment. To be eligible for unemployment a person must be able and available to seek and accept immediate full time work. If you are in jail and are offered a job, you are not able to start immediately, therefore not eligible.
