does the motor spin..ie..crank? if no possible locked up engine..try spinning it by hand..correct size socket on front crank bolt turning clockwise.. possible bad starter motor does the starter engage when the key is in the crank possition. if the motor does crank your looking at a fuel or ignition problem

i would hazzard a guess at the lamp stays on due to the fault not being taken out of its memory, if the problem has been fixed you need to clear its memory, as for the starter motor problem i had this and it was down to cranking power the starter motor demands so much in the begining and if your alternator is not charging you battery proply that could you problem, you can get this checked at any local garage

There are pull in windings and hold in windings in a solenoid on a starter. The pull in pulls the starter gear into the ring gear on the engine then the hold in takes over and allows more power for the starter to turn the engine.
