The coloured bands on a resistor tell you how much resistance is given by the component. The quality or accuracy is given by a silver of gold band at the end. If you fit a resistor of the wrong type into a circuit it may burn out the resistor or it may stop the circuit from working

Resistors (and other components) are color-coded to make it easier to read their value. Printing the value on the side presents difficulty because the component might be rotated with the letters out of sight, and gradual deterioration of the letters might make them unreadable. Color bands are more reliable and can be read from any angle.

Colour Coding is Used To Know The Value Of The Resistor.

B-BLACK - 0

B-BROWN - 1

R-RED - 2

O-ORANGE - 3

Y-YELLOW - 4

G-GREEN - 5

B-BLUE - 6

V-VOILET - 7

G-GREY - 8

W-WHITE - 9

4 Band Example:{total 4 Colours:4 th colour is tolerance...EX: Gold 5%,Silver 10%....ETC}

example: Resistor Colour Code is BROWN BLACK YELLOW SILVER

1 0 10^4 10%

Last But One colour is multiplier (i.e it is Green Means 10^5, white-10^9)

Resistor Value is = 10*10^4 = 100 K.

example 2:

5 Band : YELLOW WHITE WHITE ORANGE GOLD

4 9 9 10^3 5%(tolerance)

Resistor Value is = 499 Kohm.

They're bands of color telling you the electrical value of the component. Works better when there's not enough space to write it out.

What is the resistor color code and how is it used to identify and select resistors?

The resistor color code use to help to identify the resistance of the resistor. There are four color in the resistor that help to identify the resistance of the resistor. The first and second color represent the numerical value of the resistor. The third color represent the multiplier. The four color represent the tolerance.

How do you define zero ohm resistor?

A zero ohm resistor is a piece of wire with a resistor body. It is essentially a jumper. It is useful when a jumper is need on a printed circuit board that is assembled by automated machinery, because the automated machinery can handle resistor insertion far easier than a jumper wire. The color coding on a zero ohm resistor is one single black band.

How can a technician identify a wire wound resistor that is color coded?

The same way he/she can identify a composite resistor that is color coded or a metal film resistor that is color coded: by reading the color code bands. They all use the same color code. If for some reason the color bands are damaged and unreadable, the resistor will have to be removed and measured with a meter. However this reading may be incorrect as whatever caused the color bands to become unreadable may have also damaged the resistor, changing its value. Verify the value on the schematic!
