During the 1960s and 1970s, the United States devoted considerable resources to the protection of South Vietnam in an effort to prevent it from falling to Communist forces. Through financial and material support, advisors and military training, then finally American forces of all kinds, the U.S. expended itself on behalf of South Vietnam's independence in what turned out to be an unsuccessful military conflict (not an official war).
