Per religion, no obligation to have or to keep a beard. It depends entirely on Muslim preference and on the practices and traditions in his community. The religion emphasizes that both genders should not imitate each other. That is to say for men not to imitate, in their looking up, the women and women not to imitate men in their looking up. For example if the practice and traditional style for women is to have long hair and not for men, then men should not keep long hair (although in early ages the practice was for men to have long hair) and women should not cut their hair in men hair style.
having a beard is a sunnah, but obeying your mother is an obligation, ie, a wajib.
