The ancient Romans had the same sense of values as ourselves--family, friends, possessions, etc. They had one strikingly different value than we have and that is the sense of Roman honor, or dignitas. This is what made a Roman and set him above the so-called barbarians.

Like many ancient societies (and even some modern societies today) they were highly regulated and structure. The plebeians, or plebs, were the common people; their name meant the general body. They formed the bulk of society and were equivalent to the peasants in the Middle Ages though they enjoyed varying degrees of wealth and power. The average pleb was poor while some rose in rank and even served in the Senate on the Plebeian Council.

Below the plebs, however, were the slaves and freedman. While many freed slaves rose in rank and wealth, they were still, technically, the bottom branch of society despite whatever power they gained.

Equestrians, or Equites, were a type of middle class, though they were often made up of richer plebeians who rose in rank and station in life; during the Republic this status was based on the level of property, but during the time of the Empire it was a hereditary title. While they enjoyed more privileges compared to plebeians, they didn't have as many as the patricians/Senatorial class; they could, however, strive to become part of the patrician class and earn a spot on the Senate. They were also entitled to display their position by wearing a narrow purple stripe on their tunics. Narrow stripers was a slang term used within the Legions to indicate the social rank of a commanding officer, with broad stripers being of the patrician class. Equestrians often provided the legions with senior officers (tribunes) and high level administrators.

Next were the patricians, or those able to serve on the Senate. Other than the Imperial household these were the highest class of citizens. They enjoyed significant power, prestige, and various honors. They wore a broad, purple stripe down the right side of their tunics to display their position within society. They could be elected to serve on the Senate, become a commander of a Legion (if they possessed military experience), or serve as a high level city official or even as a governor of a province.

Roman society was a very structured society. Your status originated either with your heritage or with your wealth. The Patricians and Plebeians had the heritage from the founding of the city. There were the knights or equestrians who were the wealthy middle class, there were the Proletariat who were most of the common citizens, there were freedmen and women and there were slaves. A person's clothing told his fellow citizens who he was--a knight had his gold ring, a senator had his purple stripe on his tunic. The different classes had designated seats at theaters, races, arena events and all other public ceremonies.
