Looking at the major famines, affecting whole countries or even groups of countries, there were about 25 in Africa in the last 100 years, of which 15 occurred in the last 15 years. There is no counting the more local famine situations that have occurred. This development reflects the explosive population growth, combined with an almost constant (civil) war / insurgence situation in several African countries. It is for that reason that East Africa - with countries like Sudan and Somalia - tops the list.
