When settlers were first moving into America, one of the main colonies was Virginia. They were hoping to reap some of the profit they could make off of the land. Their first selection was to force the natives into slavery, but the Native Americans were not suited for the type of slavery the English had and they ran away. In 1609 the first slave arrived in Jamestown.

The first settlers of the colony of North Carolina migrated from Virginia around 1657. They settled in what was known as the Pamlico District, later moving westward.
When the settlers traveled the trail in the mid-1700's it was a little,old Indian trail. Then more and more settlers traveled the old Indian trail and the trail began to get larger.Soon enough the trail was big enough for wagons to travel the trail and then they named the trail The Great Wagon Road.
