The Whig Party. While the Whig Party generally was "for" actions that expanded the idea of a nation, especially growing the west - Lincoln was a Whig before he was a Republican - the party really rose as a counter to Andrew Jackson. The Whigs had two presidential candidates elected as President - Wm Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor. So it's safe to say running for President as a Whig and winning, was hazardous to one's health.
The Whigs eventually wore out in the 1850's and were replaced with Republicans as the dominant opposition party to Democrats.

The most significant change in American political institutions during the first 100 years following the adoption of the Constitution was probably the abolition of the property ownership requirement for voting. During the era of "Jacksonian Democracy" in the 1820s and 1830s, state after state drastically increased the number of people eligible to vote by extending suffrage to all adult, white males. This transformed not only the way in which elections were run, but also the kinds of policies government officials would enact.
For some it was the prohibition against slavery and others opposed the mandate to be Catholics and to provide financial support to the Catholic Church.
