Not that I know of in the book 'Hatchet' there was a porcupine in the cave Brian was in and he was in the forest of Canada so yeah I don't think so.
Jonas live in a dwelling with his father, mother and sister (not biological)
because he gets Gaven the hatchet by the pilot and the hatchet keeps him alive and teaches him how to live in the wild. Without his hatchet he never would of been able to make a fire, make tools, or make weapons
