depends on the religion. in Islam it's strictly the husband's responsibility to take care and provide for his wife and children, even after the divorce she is still supposed to be a part of his life, he provides for her until and if she gets married . Ex-wife is supposed to be a man's "chastity" in Islam, especially if she is the mother fo his children. He tries to keep her reputation clean and et.c.
in general, husband-supposed to provide for the wife is a condition in all the religions. But nowadays, it "upgrades" according to the cultural & enviromental factors of each country.
