It completely depends on the guy. I started early, began asking girls out about seventh grade. It's a completely nerve wracking experience for guys, no matter how confident they appear when they ask. For some of us, it takes days just to build up the courage to say hello. Keep that in mind if someone ever asks you out, even if it's someone you'd never consider dating... It takes a lot of courage to do it..
