It entirely depends on the vehicle's type of engine and the number of cylinders it has.
On a 1997 Ford Expedition : There is no distributor If you have the 4.6 liter V8 engine you have the Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS ) with ( 2 coils ) and spark plug wires and If you have the 5.4 liter V8 engine , it has the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils
The Mitsubishi 1.8 liter firing order is 1-3-4-2
In a 1997 Ford F-150 : There were ( 3 ) engine sizes from the factory : A 4.2 liter V6 engine A 4.6 liter V8 engine ( which has two coil packs and spark plug wires ) A 5.4 liter V8 engine which has the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils
On the front of the engine under the two ignition coils, follow the plug wires and under the coils is the ignition module. Changed mine twice . Works better now.
In a 2000 Ford Taurus : That would depend on which engine you have : The 3.0 liter " Vulcan " V6 engine has the EDIS ( Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ) which has ( 1 coil pack ) with 6 towers for the spark plug wires The 3.0 liter " Duratec " V6 engine has the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system and has ( 6 individual coils )
No , the Ford 5.4 liter V8 engine has ALWAYS had the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils In a 1997 Ford Expedition , the 4.6 liter V8 engine uses ( 2 ) coil packs and ( 8 ) spark plug wires
Firing Order1-2-3-4-5-61234561234561-3-5 is in back ===2-4-6 is in front, 5-2-3-6-4-1 is the wires from coils,
on top back of engine,to be exact there are 3 coils! the coils have the plug wires on them.
Looking at your engine you will see on top 2 black blocks (coils) and wires that come out of them into the engine. Pull the wires from the engine, and unscrew the coils from the top and remove them. Once you do, youll be able to see the plugs and remove them.

If you mean the Ignition Control Module and the engine is a 3.1 Liter it is on the front of the engine under the coils. There are 3 of them with 2 spark plug wires attached to each. They have to be removed to access the module. On some models you will need an oddball 5.5 millimeter socket to get the coils off. I bought mine at "Autozone".
