Cast iron stoves were first made in quantity around 1728 in Germany. These stoves were known as Five-plate or Jamb stoves. The stove consisted of 5 cast iron plates attached to each other to form a box. It was built into the wall of a fireplace. The front of the box was open and faced the inside of the fireplace. Coals and wood could be put into it. The back of the Jamb stove warmed the room behind the fireplace.
Another one of the more famous stoves to be invented was the Franklin Stove in 1728. This stove was made by Benjamin Franklin. Unlike modern woodstoves the Franklin Stove was open in the front. Despite being open in the front it still provided more heat and less smoke then a traditional open fireplace.
