Slavery has never been made illegal on an international level. However, Britain made slave trading in the British Empire illegal on March 25, 1807, and the United States made the international trade of slaves illegal on January 1, 1808.

Slavery was completely abolished in 1833 (in the BritishEmpire), yet it apparantly wasn't necessary to abolish in homes. Until the 6th April 2010, however, which is when all slavery was banned in the UK, on pain of up to 14 years in prison.
