At the end of World War II in 1945, Germany was separated into four occupation zones, administered by the Russians, British, French and Americans respectively. It was intended that Germany would eventually be reunified as a separate country. However due to the onset of the Cold War, Russia decided to create East Germany as a separate country under communist control, rather than give up control and let it become democratic/capitalist as it likely would have. The other three zones were reunited as the democratic country of West Germany.

The Allies agreed to take charge of parts of Germany to oversee reconstruction of the country. The British took the west, the Soviets took the east, the Americans took the largest region and the French took a very small area. Berlin was in the Soviet part but was also divided into four sectors, with the Soviet sector being the largest. However, the Soviets didn't coorperate and refused to give their part of Germany back. As a result, the American, British and French parts were joined to form the capitalist Federal Republic, while the Soviet part became a puppet state called (somewhat incorrectly) the Democratic Republic.

West Berlin remained a tricky situation, being part of the West but surrounded by territory from the East. The Soviets decided to shut off all transport links to the West, so the Allies retaliated by sending in food shipments by air. The Berlin Airlift continued until the city was receiving more food than it normally would, so the Soviets gave up, opened up the transport links but later built the Berlin Wall.

Originally, Germany was attacked and defeated on two fronts, the Eastern and the Western. Upon surrendering, the Soviet armies stayed and occupied what became East Germany, a puppet state controlled by Moscow permanently.

The Western portion of the country, occupied by the Allied forces of France, England and the United States, became a democracy when the Allied forces withdrew eventually.

However, the capital of Berlin, under Soviet occupation, was divided into four distinct zones of occupation, each one controlled by one of the conquering nations. The three Allied zones became part of West Germany when a land corridor was established to connect them to the Western portion of Germany.

Russia attempted to regain the parts of Berlin they did not control by sealing off the corridor. This caused the famous " Berlin Airlift " to send American food and fuel to the citizens of West Berlin to prevent starvation.

The Allied armies were told to stop before coming to Berlin, allowing the Russians to conquer the city by themselves. This was probably agreed to by the Western leaders because the Germans had so severely and visciously destroyed so many civilian populations of so many Russian cities during the war. For the Russians to capture Hitler and his cronies, and destroy the German capital city, would be the ultimate sweet revenge.

Following her defeat in 1945, Germany was divided into 4 occupation zones, each with one of the big players in WW2 occupying one, these being France, the UK, America and the USSR. Berlin similiarily was divided into the 4 occupation zones also. however, Berlin was situated inside the USSR's part of Germany. Due to France and the UK's economic weakness, the US dominated the western sector, while the USSR dominated the other. This lead to a clear ideological divide, a capitalist western Germany, and a communist eastern Germany. the Berlin blockade cemented the western sectors' will in trying to keep their sphere of influence in Germany. On the 13th of August, 1961, there came a physical divide in Germany: the Berlin wall, that separated Germany till its dismantling at the end of the cold war in 1989.
