Votes are cast a polling place. Depending on the type of voting equipment used, the votes may be cast at the voting place or at a central location. in the national [ presidential ] election votes are counted at each poll then city-wide tabulated at city Voter Registrar's office then sent to Secretary of state for state-wide validation

Absentee ballots
It has always been private. US law prevents campaigning near a polling place, and that anyone interfere with a person voting.
Voting is a communal activity and so therefore the location of a vote is in a public place. For example, you are voting in a local poll for a town. There be 3 or 4 voting locations where people can vote, often so it's easy for people to access the vote. One might be at a local spa, or another location could be the local religious establishment. So in essence, anywhere where the public can access.
Only if you're of legal voting age, are eligible to vote and are registered. Some states allow registration at the polling place just prior to voting.

Oregon's elections are conducted by mail. They have no polling place elections. So, no, you are not required to produce identification.

If you have a mail-in ballot to cast an early vote or an absentee vote, you can do so by mail. Otherwise, you must go to your prescribed voting place to cast your vote. Your voting place, also called a poll, is determined by the local elections officials. If you are registered to vote, your voter registration card will tell you where your polling place is. If not, you will be notified by mail.
