In World War I, German military innovations were many in number. One especially significant one was tactical: the Germans assembled "shock" units whose purpose was to move fast, avoid enemy strong-points, and reach rear areas in disruptive fashion. This tactic carried over into World War II with "Blitzkrieg" tactics. Another was a specially designed helmet that provided remarkably thorough head-protection for soldiers: this basic design is even used today by the American military.
