pull first spark plug on driver side. now turn engine over by having someone bump the engine over. you can do this by turning key on then quickly turn to start then let off. look on the balancer which is the big round thing on the front of the crankshaft which is what the bottom pulley is bolted to. there is a line on the balancer and there is a timing tab on the front of timing cover. when you bump the engine over hold your finger over spark plug hole will bumping engine .when you feel air come out then turn engine slowly till the line on balancer lines up with 0 mark on timing tab. now put distributor in engine with the end of the rotor facing towardsthe front of engine about five oclock position or towards driver side where you took spark plug out. if it doesn't go all the way down then bump engine over till it does. now line all this up again and see where rotor is pointing if it is close then put dist. cap on.the metal pointer on rotor should be pointing to the driver side of the two terminals on the front of cap
Assuming this is a 350 Chevy engine, you need a 9/16" distributor wrench or you may sneak in there with a 9/16" open end wrench if the bolt is not to tight.
