I think someone gave you an Internally regulated alternator in place of your external type, it will not work unless you do some major wiring changes.

This wire is connected to the solenoid along with a wire going to the power distribution system (Fuse box), but the connection or split is after the fusible link on the wire comming from the alternator. On most vehicles, those connections are attached to the same solenoid bolt. The connection there at the bolt, is done there because the large Positive battery cable also comes to that bolt.
Alternator oil pipe? There is no oil pipe connected to the alternator that I have ever seen. The alternator has sealed bearings and does not require any outside lubrication. Are you sure you are looking at the alternator? Is it possible you have a leak at the power steering pump and that is what you are looking at? I really have no answer for you, only more questions. Please clarify. Clay is absolutely right. The alternator has no outside oil connection. Find out what REALLY is leaking. A/C compressor? Power Steering?
You didn't mention the year, make and model of vehicle but if the relay has 4 prongs, remove the relay, with key off probe the 4 connections with a test light, one of the connections should light the test light. Using a jumper wire connect the hot connection to the connection diagonally opposite, this will jump the fuel pump for testing purposes only!
Hey Paul==a bad connection will causi it to smoke or something drawing excessive curent but it should blow a fuse before it smokes. I would think it is a bad connection in the switch itself, NOT an alternator. GoodluckJoe
