It must be a timing CHAIN because the Gates website ( they make timing belts
etc ) does not list a timing belt for it
I asked a service rep at Classic BMW in Plano that question and he said "never". The 740 has a timing chain, not a timing belt. Cars with timing belts usually have to change it every 80-100k miles, but this does not apply to timing chains. If your timing chain is intact, you should not have to have it replaced. Chains do not stretch or wear out. More likely, if you have a E38 (1994-2001), the timing chain may rattle, which is NOT an indication of a problem with the timing chain. There is a timing chain tensioner that loses its ability over time to apply proper tension to the chain, and that is a relatively easy and inexpensive replacement. Another well-known problem is that you may eventually need to replace the timing chain GUIDES, which is plastic and can wear and break off over time.
The timing chain is slowly set as the mechanic tightens the thread.
check all tour belts. it usually means that your timing belt has slipped.
how do I set the timing on a BMW 740
Very carefully, if you mess up slightly you will experience a severe loss of power. If you mess up badly you will destroy your engine. 1) Remove the Fan Cover and then the Fan 2) Loosen the Belts and then remove them 3) Remove the Timing Belt Cover 4) Loosen the Tensioner 5) Pull the old belt off * The most important: 6) Align the Dots with the corresponding Gear 7) Put in the new belt 8) Reverse to put back together
in the hood on the right side
Not mine , I was doing about 70 when my belt broke . It took me 4 hours and $20 to know for sure boy how aggravating not knowing if my valves were bent or not. The good news is that my volvo with 345,000 miles fired right up when all work was complete. 24mpg and no payments. The above answer may be true for that owner but I do not see how it is possible. The 1986 Volvo 740 GLE 4 cylinder is an interference engine and as such if the cam belt breaks you will almost certainly have internal engine damage. The belt should be changed every 50,000 miles.
Open the hood and look after the fan belt ! Follow the belt and you will find it .
They may still be available from your Volvo dealer. There is no charge for them.
There is 2 main things that will do that. #1 The fuel injectors or fuel pump is going bad. #2 The timing belt needs to to be changed, which needs to be done every 35,000 to 45,000 miles after the first time it is changed.
740
The timing can be adjusted by loosing the 2 bolts that hold the distributor on any pre-1989 740s. Be sure your timing belt is installed properly too. Another note here, the harmonic balancer on the 4 cyl Volvo has a rubber mounting between the inner part that attaches to the crankshaft and the outer part that the drive belts go around. They are known to slip. If your timing is way off, put a small white paint mark on the crank pulley and rev the engine a few times while watching it with a timing light. If it is changing positions a lot then you are going to have to replace the balancer before it comes completely apart. you cannot set the timing in a 740. if it doesn't run, it's not right. No one said it did not run. Timing belts can be off as many as three teeth and still run. Over 35 years in the Volvo business myself. Do note the question was about a 1990 Model that is a crankshaft position sensor fired car. The timing is not adjustable on a 1989 or later as the above answer states, PRE-1989
