Every country in the world is dependent on other countries for its trade, imports and exports. Africa however has taken its dependency several steps further. Since 1950, it has been the biggest receiver of development aid in the world, to the tune of over one trillion dollars. To this day, African countries receive a yearly amount of foreign aid of about 50 billion dollars.
The average percentage of 'official' foreign aid in African countries' national budgets is still 20%. In several African countries this percentage may be as high as 50%. Unofficial foreign aid may bring this percentage even higher: it is no secret that China among others is investing huge amounts in the economies of African countries like Zimbabwe and Zambia. The ultimate goal of these investments in many cases - next to political influence - is the facilitation of exports of raw materials and Natural Resources from these countries to China.
